95.03% of U.S. Colleges Do Not Require SAT Test Scores in Their Application Process

The SAT test is still important in college admission, especially for the top ranked schools, but more schools change their policies to make the SAT score optional or not mandatory. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic drove the changes, because of the travel difficulties to test site. However, although the pandemic is coming to end, several schools have extended their polices and more schools consider to remove the SAT test from the application requirements.

In the academic year 2023-2024, 747 colleges neither required nor recommended to submit the SAT scores. In addition, 1,088 schools considered the SAT score but not require to submit it. Together, 95.03% of U.S. colleges do not require the SAT score to applicants. Compared to last year, 8 more schools did not require the SAT score.

96 colleges, 4.97%% of 4-years schools, require to submit SAT score. It is a sharp decrease compared to last years's number. Instead, more schools changed their policies to "considered but not required" (56.34%%). However, although the number of the SAT required schools were reduced, students still took the SAT test and submitted the score to applied schools. 50.91%% schools have the SAT scores that students submitted and it is similar to the last year's figure.
