Campus Safety and Security Matters by State

For the calendar year 2023, a total of 208,743 incidents related to campus safety and securty occured at U.S. colleges. It includes criminal offenses, arrests, diciplinary actions, VAWA (Violence Against Women Act), and hate crimes.

By subject, there were 41,799 criminal offenses, 20,896 arrests, 125,525 disciplinary actions, 19,185 VAWA, and 1,338 hate crimes at U.S. colleges.

When limited to on-campus, there were 186,382 incidents reported. By incident type, 32,402 criminal offenses, 14,123 arrests, 121,728 disciplinary actions, 17,010 VAWA, and 1,119 hate crimes. In adddition, there were 1,658 fires reporeted at U.S. colleges.

The following geographic chart illustrates the number of incidents related to campus safety and security by state. Darker colored states have higer number of safety incidents, while lighter colored states have lower number of incidents.

We note that a state with a higher number of incidents does not necessarily mean that it is not safer than a state with fewer incidents, because states with more students generally have more incidents. The incident rate considering the number of students can be a criterion for judging campus safety. You can check the incident rate per 1,000 students in the comparison table in next section.
