There are 17,021,522 undergraduate and 3,320,736 graduate students. The proportion of undergraduate students is 83.68% and the proportion of graduate students is 16.32%.

By school level, 15,379,194 students enrolled in 4-year colleges, 4,651,632 students enrolled in community colleges, and 310,772 students enrolled in trade schools.

California colleges have the most number of students of 1,660,826. Alaska colleges have the least number of students of 22,430.
